PSA Women in Politics: Voting, Women & Afghanistan

Date: Monday, November 13, 2006
Time: 12 - 1pm
Location: TBA

Description:
Marilyn Evans worked with women in Muslim counties: Afghanistan, Yemen, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. She worked with two NGO's dedicated to the democratic development and a UN election-related mission in Afghanistan where she provided consultation, coaching, and training for women who were interested in the political process. For women who were actually seeking office, she provided campaign training and coaching.

In these countries, women are represented in the various political parties, but do not truly have an influence as political leaders. Women are not taken seriously as candidates for office due to their lack of power, unless the woman is related to a poweful male figure.

In Afghanistan, Marilyn served as the "gender specialist" for the UN, as well as continued work efforts with women who were political party leaders.
